Tarangire National Park
Highlight
A lot of the tourists’ head to Ngorongoro and Serengeti; however, a few of them get to know that on their route to the famous Northern national parks of Tanzania there is one of the most rewarding parks called Tarangire National Park also known “The Elephant Paradise”. On the famous Northern Safari circuit Tarangire is the least visited national park yet at a right time of the year it can offer the best of Tanzania’s safari one would ever think of.
All the big predators and over 550 bird species are housed in the Tarangire but the most notable is one the long-necked gerenuk and the climbing lions that you won’t find in any other national park in the north of Tanzania.
In case you would love to see one of the oldest and also the upside down trees in Africa, Tarangire is the place. It’s also regard as the best spot on the African continent for viewing leopards best on the fact that it is mostly covered in open woodland with thick forests set along the river.
The government body responsible for managing the Tarangire National Park is the Tanzania National Parks Authority with support from several wildlife conservation Agencies. In case you are organizing a safari by yourself own, you need to know that the entrance fee per day is $45 and a concession fee of $59 for those whose accommodation is within the boundaries of the National Park.
The best time for Tarangire is June to October due to the fact that it’s a dry season. This attracts a large number of elephants, antelopes, giraffes and buffaloes to river because inside the forest its dry so most of the animals are forced to come to the river banks. The times we don’t recommend the Tarangire at all are during the heavy rains of April and October. During this time the forest is flooded by water which makes the animals lazy to move to river banks.
Tarangire can be reached by air and road. The nearest airport and link to the park is Kilimanjaro international airport in Arusha. Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and KLM all have flights to Kilimanjaro. From Kilimanjaro International Airport, one would need to book a smaller plane to one of the airstrips in the park or hire a car to go by road. The route by road starting from Arusha takes anywhere between 4 hours.
