Also known as “The home of the climbing lions” Lake Manyara national park shouldn’t be under looked as one rushes to the famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro craters. Being the entry and the exit point for “The northern safari circuit” a day or two stop over can doesn’t only reward we a relaxation point of the safari but also rewards with lots of wildlife and activities.
Over 400 birds have been recorded in this magnificent National park making its Bird life very notable in the entire East Africa. A lot of prey birds and the pink colored flamingos are your receptionist to the Lake Manyara National park.
The other major highlight of Lake Manyara besides the usual wild life are the climbing lions. The lions of this national park have developed a skill of climbing trees as they run away from the bugs just like the lions of Ishasha of Queen Elizabeth national Park in Uganda. The other visible wild life before even the boat cruise at lake Manyara are the Zebras, giraffes, buffalos and a elephants. Then on the boat cruise be sure to spot as many hippos and crocs as possible.
There is one luxury lodge within the Park, Banda’s, hostel and a number of campsites. All other overnight options for Manyara are outside the Park including many on the edge of the Rift Valley with wonderful views across the valley.
Lake Manyara National Park offers a range of exciting activities including day game drives, walking safaris, night game drive, canoeing, canopy tour, bird watching and hot bush meals that gives someone a reason to smile!
The best game viewing months for a Lake Manyara safari are from December to February and from May to July although it is a destination that is on most Tanzania safari itineraries all year round.
Lake Manyara can be reached by air and road. The nearest airport and link to the park is Kilimanjaro international airport in Arusha. Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and KLM all have flights to Kilimanjaro. From Kilimanjaro International Airport, one would need to book a smaller plane to one of the airstrips in the park or hire a car to go by road. The route by road starting from Arusha takes anywhere between 3,5 to 4 hours.
