Lake Nakuru National Park

Kenya

Highlight

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru provides the visitor with one of Kenya’s best-known images. Thousands of flamingo, joined into a massive flock, fringe the shores of this soda lake. A pulsing pink swathe of life that carpets the water, the flamingo is a breathtaking sight.

The lake has become world-famous for these birds, who visit the lake to feed on algae that form on the lake bed. They move back and forth, feeding and occasionally and spectacularly taking to flight, filling the sky over the lake with color.

Wildlife: Nakuru has more than just flamingos. This is a major National Park and an important sanctuary for Rhino. The Black and White Rhinos are found in this National park and they are often seen resting under acacias by the Lakeshore.

The park abounds with game drives. There are huge herds of waterbuck, zebra, buffalo, the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, and more.

This is one of your best chances of seeing Leopard in Kenya, and there are several large prides of Lion.

Exploring beyond the lake is always rewarding and there are forests, cliffs, waterfalls, and more to be found here

Best time to visit: The best time of the year to visit Lake Nakuru national park for a safari includes months such as; June to September are sunny days in Lake Nakuru national park which are recommended for wildlife viewing experiences since during the rainy seasons the grass is longer making it difficult to see the wildlife species.

The government body responsible for managing the Lake Nakuru National Park is the Kenya Tourism Board with support from several wildlife conservation Agencies. The Park entry of Lake Nakuru is €54, and the main activities on this national park are birding and game drives.

The greatest health risks in Kenya like all the other East African are accidents and malaria. Much of Kenya lies at too high an elevation for malaria to be a major concern, but the disease is present and prophylactic drugs are recommended. Travelers should seek professional medical advice on taking anti-malarial medicines and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, especially between dawn and dusk.

Travelers should ensure they are up to date with vaccinations, following the advice of their local healthcare provider, and should consider bringing a small first aid kit. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required.

Lake Nakuru can be reached by air and road. The nearest airport and link to the park is Jomo Kenyatta international airport in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.  Kenya Airways, RwandAir, Uganda Airline, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and KLM all have flights to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. From Nairobi, we recommend you use road transport is that a road trip to this amazing park is really rewarding. The distances from Nairobi Kenya’s capital to Lake Nakuru can be covered in about 3 hours or even lesser depending on the traffic.
